Background: In what seems like several centuries ago (1978), I embarked on a normal corporate career path. I graduated from college and found a job in Marketing Communications at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft.
I loved it! And I was promoted and given raises and everyone told me they loved me and I would have given my right arm for the Company...
And I got laid off.
I found a job with a start-up computergraphic company (1982ish) and loved it! This was the beginning of the desktop revolution, although we didn't know it at that time. The IBM PC was just introduced.
"Ring!" went the phone one day. It was my first employer, giving me 6,000 better reasons to work for them. "Be right there," I replied.
Big mistake. You can't go home again. Don't ever jump for money. Luckily, a headhunter found me. He matched me up to a small aerospace manufacturer, where I worked as a Manager of Marketing Communications.
I loved it! And I was promoted and given raises and everyone told me they loved me and I would have given my right arm for the Company...
And then the Company was sold (1988). Most of the managers weren't going to keep their jobs...
I spent three years teaching at New Horizons Computer Learning Centers in Windsor, Connecticut. Bill Daniels owned the franchise. The Daniels have class. They also care about their people. I was Instructor-of-the-Year my last two years. I loved it.
But then Corporate bought the franchise back from the Daniels and the days of enjoyable instruction ended. I left for a bunch of reasons! (But I do miss a lot of my fellow instructors like Cyndi, Jen, Bridgette, Abe, Jim, Melinda, Buford, Kate, Travis and whole bunch of others! Great bunch of people.)
While I did do some custom training classes after that, I migrated over to a consulting firm in Hartford, and am currently producing web sites and literature, providing help desk support, some database work, as well as learning how to administer a server.
Best,
Howard Latimer
